I have seen and heard it all over the years. Unfortunately, there is a lot of bad advice when it comes to protecting your homes foundation. This bad advice usually comes in the form of recommending repairs involving the installation of foundation piers. What most home owners think is structural foundation damage is (in many cases) simply cosmetic. However, some foundation companies (not all) prescribe the same pier repair method when it comes to foundations. I have worked with local structural engineers for many years, on both small and large drainage projects here in the NWA area. I can honestly tell you in most cases piers are not the recommended fix for foundations in our area due to the types of soils commonly found in NWA. The most recommended fix to protect your homes foundation is a good drainage system, especially your gutter downspout drainage system. Most minor structural damages, and cosmetic ones, can easily be prevented and greatly minimized by simply installing a gutter downspout system. Something the home owner could easily do themselves!
